During the shortest month of the year, exactly in the middle of National Chocolate Lover’s Month, Valentine’s Day lives. It is a day not only dedicated to showing our love for those special people in our lives but also for spreading cheer, allowing ourselves to be just a little bit spoiled, indulging in some sugary treats, and giving ourselves some of the same care and compassion that we show others on a regular basis.
On Thursday, February 13th, in preparation for Valentine’s Day, Youth Zone members joined forces to bake up some love, create genuine smiles, and make our small little corner of the world just a little bit sweeter by making and sharing a variety of molded chocolate lollipops and chocolate covered cake pops. Youth Zone members rolled cake balls, melted chocolate, filled rose, daisy, heart, and teddy bear shaped molds, carefully packed everything in individual wrappers, and generously shared their creations with all who visited the Youth Zone that evening. Whether someone was present for the entirety of our chocolate workshop, or they only briefly stopped by the Youth Zone to pick up dinner on their way home from a long day, each and every person had the chance to pick out a few special treats.
As Youth Zone members worked, they shared stories about their plans for the chocolates. Some personalized gift tags for their significant others and children, while others planned to share treats with friends and neighbors. One member initially planned to take just one chocolate lollipop for himself, but when told he could take more, his face lit up with joy as he selected several to share with his siblings.
Of course, no one could forget to set aside a treat or two for their most important Valentines, themselves! After all, what better way is there to treat yourself on a cold, rainy day in the middle of February than to indulge in a rich chocolatey delight?
